What’s the Science Behind Custom Louvers?

Custom Louvers
There’s a science that influences the design of custom louvers, read on to find out more!

Without even realizing it, you’ve probably seen louvers before, though you may not have known the name for them. Custom louvers are defined by their angled slats, or flat strips, that are often wrapped around commercial buildings. They’re a kind of fencing structure that still allows airflow but prevents dirt, moisture, and debris from getting in. Whether utilized for security, privacy, or utility purposes, custom louvers certainly have their benefits, but how exactly do they work?

Free Zones

As simple as a louver construction may seem, there is actually a lot of math backing up the design. For example, the free area uses the total open area and divides it by the wall opening. You’d also subtract any obstructions, like the blades or the frame. Typically, the free area uses around 35 to 60 percent of the wall opening, though the higher the percentage, the more air is allowed to pass through. Proper louver design should also minimize water flow.

Water Considerations

Tests can also be done to measure how much water can get through a louver, depending on what it is used for. This is compared alongside airflow to get a more accurate picture of just how the custom louvers will ultimately function.

Preventing Airflow

One test that is sometimes done measures airflow resistance as a result of any obstructions. This can include filters, coils, ductwork, or any other part of a building that may prevent airflow. Air is pushed through the louver at various velocities to determine what the resistance is. This is largely dependent on the shape and angle of the blades, though it’s important to know in case you’re using louvers for a specific purpose like to surround a generator.

Louvers as a Science

While custom louvers may be an effective building tool, there is quite a bit that goes into the design. For them to work effectively, it’s important to do the right research and prep work. Checking for water penetration, airflow resistance, and other factors may not seem like all that big of a deal, but when it comes to the performance of a generator or HVAC system being influenced by your custom louvers, those little details can stack up.
